Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana did battles without screen transitions The combat system of Chrono Trigger, Tales of Phantasia, and Secret of Mana are better It's an interesting story and interesting and mysterious world Earthbound could be lighthearted and serious Having enemies that you're much overleveled for run away from you was a neat idea And fun for people who wanted to try something different. While I don't think it makes it better than more traditional RPGs, I love traditional fantasy settings, it was creative. The art style and setting are unique, for people would like a change of pace It was an interesting take on the Dragon Quest battle system I'm going to try to mention some things I think are good and maybe not good about Earthbound, myself. Sorry but I'm just frankly going to have to disagree with your facts. I'm looking at you FF9 (and lesser so FF8) speed runs. There are many other beloved RPG's that can cause awful RNG to occur. (By the way buffalos exist in desert areas in other games: see Thomas was alone) Putting it with a crazy sand elemental, and a dinosaur-esque enemy does not bother me at all. I can't think of another SNES era game with as many different kinds and variations of enemies. I would agree this would suck if it was a random battles but you can choose your battles with a bit of skill in this game. There are lots of MMO's to this day that have enemies that are random difficult spikes. Having hard enemies in areas is not inherently bad game design. I'll have to disagree with some of your points.
